About SmartShip

SmartShip is a Horizon 2020 project that develops an integrated digital platform using advanced analytics, IoT data and decision-support tools to improve the energy efficiency, fuel use and emissions of vessels, while embedding circular-economy principles into ship management.

1. Market Needs

Identify and describe real marine market needs related to energy efficiency, emissions control, and end-user requirements, in order to define realistic, industry-driven case scenarios.

2. Knowledge Exchange

Foster collaboration between academic and non-academic experts in IoT, data analytics, decision support, and optimisation, with a shared focus on maritime energy efficiency and emissions reduction.

3. Data Intelligence

Design and develop a data analytics solution and decision support tool that collects vessel sensor data, manages the IoT environment, and applies optimisation algorithms to support ship engine operations.

4. Circular Integration

Investigate how existing ship infrastructure can be leveraged to support circular economy practices, particularly in the management and lifecycle optimisation of engine components.


5. Holistic Optimisation

Provide an integrated framework for maritime energy efficiency and emissions control by combining new tools with existing systems to optimise the efficiency of day-to-day vessel operations.

6. Real Validation

Demonstrate system effectiveness through real-world maritime use cases, while supporting long-term impact through research collaboration, knowledge transfer, and targeted training materials for sustainable exploitation.
